Men's Health Special Report

The 6 Health Red Flags Every Man Over 40 Should Know About

“How one simple daily habit — combined with targeted strategies — helped me feel better at 48 than I did in my thirties.”

- Dr. Charles - CEO & Founder, Lifeboost Coffee

Dr. Charles holding a cup of coffee

Hi, I'm Dr Charles. CEO and Founder of Lifeboost Coffee. As I turned 40, I noticed my body slowing down. It was harder to recover from workouts. Harder to lose weight.

Harder to gain muscle. I would walk into a room and forget why I went in there in the first place. I think that's normal every once in a while, but I noticed it happening more often.

My immune system was taking a hit more often and I would get more colds, allergies and sinus infections. I also would notice how foods would affect my gut health. Dairy, wheat, sugar, carbs in general, seed oils, would cause bloating, gas, weight gain, even acid reflux. My joints were hurting more from years of wear and tear and my cholesterol was increasing.

I didn't like it. Aging sucks. I still felt like I was 25 mentally, but physically, I could tell I was not.

It was time to do something about it and I started to get deeper into biohacking, longevity and research to come up with ways to slow down the aging process.

This article is a culmination of a majority of things I take and do on a daily basis. I will be 48 this year, and feel better now than I did in my thirties.

It's a simple list that I've accumulated over the years.

My advice? Don't try to do everything all at once. That sets you up for failure. Slowly add these into your daily life and form habits.

I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me!

The New Men's Health Crisis No One Warns You About (And How To Reverse It)

What do GI Joe and Men's Health Week have in common?

No, this isn't a cheesy joke. In fact, it's actually a rather serious question.

If you grew up in the 80s, then you've likely heard the following line of encouragement from the one and only GI Joe - "knowing is half the battle."

And Men's Health Week? Well, "knowing" is what this annually dedicated time is all about.

Why?

Because bluntly stated, there's just some things you'll have to keep an eye on more closely when it comes to your health.

For instance, brain health is a big one for men.

Elderly hands clasped together

1.5x

"Men are 1.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than women." 1

Even mild cognitive impairment is more common in men than women, especially as you age.2
Some studies suggest men's brains age faster than women's.3

And, what about heart health?

1 in 4

One in four American men die from cardiovascular events, and men typically have their first heart attack 10 years earlier than women.4

Man experiencing chest pain

Heart disease

is not just the leading cause of death globally, it's also the leading cause of death in men.5

Sexual health?

Each of these areas (and more) affect men differently, but the thing is, the issues we've mentioned thus far are preventable!

And, that's the entire point of and purpose behind Men's Health Week - highlighting preventable health concerns so you can either address them early, or better yet, avoid them altogether!

Here, I'm joining arms with you to fight the first half of this battle, looking at the top areas of concern for men's health, and providing you with some of the best ways to support your body.

Then, the next half of the battle (implementation, prioritization) is up to you!

1
Red Flag No. 1

Why Heart Health Is the #1 Predictor of How You'll Age

Men are significantly more likely to experience cardiovascular issues earlier in life. One in four American men will die from heart disease.

And the first heart attack often strikes a decade earlier than it does in women.

But research shows something remarkable…

Is Coffee Helping or Hurting Your Heart?

Studies have shown men who drink clean, antioxidant-rich coffee daily

have lower risks of:

  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Cardiovascular-related mortality

A 2021 study published in Circulation: Heart Failure found that drinking 1–2 cups of coffee per day was associated with a 5–12% decreased risk of heart failure. Another large review in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that moderate coffee consumption is linked to lower all-cause mortality and improved cardiovascular outcomes.

One reason coffee is such a powerful tool in your total body health arsenal is due to its antioxidant content which can aid in lowering inflammation (a driver of heart disease) and reducing oxidative stress.8

Of course, not all coffee is the same. That's why sourcing and testing matter. Some coffees may be exposed to unwanted chemicals during cultivation and processing, while others prioritize cleaner growing practices and rigorous quality standards.

Lifeboost Coffee's beans are single-origin, shade-grown, and tested for over 400 mycotoxins, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

That means every cup is crafted to deliver antioxidants without the same chemical burden found in conventional coffee.

For men, that matters a lot.

Supplement Focus

Nitric Oxide: The Molecule Men Over 40 Need Most

Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the most important molecules for male cardiovascular health.

In many studies, it has been shown to help:

  • Relax blood vessels
  • Enhance oxygen delivery
  • Improve circulation
  • Improve athletic performance
  • Support healthy blood pressure
  • Support erectile function

But nitric oxide production declines with age, especially in men.

That's why many men turn to nitric-oxide-supporting supplements — and research backs them up.

A 2016 study in The Journal of Clinical Hypertension found that boosting nitric oxide levels can significantly improve vascular function and reduce blood pressure.9

Nitric oxide molecular model

Better circulation

=

Better heart health, Better performance,

and Better vitality.

Some men incorporate nitric oxide supplements to help support improved athletic performance as well, as these boosts also help your body to deliver oxygen through your blood to your muscles faster.

With the same benefit in mind, some have even found nitric oxide supplementation to aid in erectile function.

So, while there are potentially added benefits associated with its use, each area of support evidenced in nitric oxide supplementation boils down to one primary potential benefit - improved heart health.

Supplement Focus

Nattokinase: Nature's Blood Vessel Cleaner

Nattokinase is a natural supplement made from a traditional Japanese food, natto, made from fermented soybeans. While Nattokinase’s potential is inconclusive, it has garnered the attention of many researchers and studies. Research suggests nattokinase can:

  • Support the break down fibrin (a protein involved in clot formation)
  • Support healthy blood viscosity
  • Support improved circulation
  • Support reducing blood pressure
Fermented soybeans and natto ingredients

Support arterial health. A 2022 review in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine concluded that nattokinase has multiple cardiovascular‑protective effects and may help reduce the risk of hypertension and stroke.10

Dr. Kevin Wang, associate professor of molecular biology at Northeastern State University, is one of the leading researchers of nattokinase, and suggests nattokinase supports healthy circulation and supports normal fibrin breakdown, which would suggest it could be a factor in breaking down blood clots.”11

Nattokinase, as a single compound, in some cases, has been shown to not only possess multiple cardiovascular disease preventative effects, it also can alleviate unwanted pharmacological effects commonly experienced when using traditional meds.

For men concerned about heart health — especially as they age — nattokinase has the potential to be one of the most promising natural tools available to support heart health.

Scans and Tests Focus

Coronary Calcium Scan

You know the saying… "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

And, this is essentially what a coronary calcium scan is.

This type of scan is basically a CT scan of your heart aimed at detecting early plaque buildup and producing a score which indicates your personal risk of heart attack.

Scans like this can provide you with the information you need to fine tune your diet and exercise regimen, also helping you navigate any changes or tweaks you may need to make to ensure your heart is healthy, gets healthy, and/or remains healthy.13

Coronary calcium scan on a medical monitor

Walking

Walking is free. And, walking is accessible to everyone.

But even better, walking is one of the best ways to improve the health of your heart.

Just 30 minutes of brisk walking each day can:

  • Help strengthen your heart
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Support reduction of LDL (bad) cholesterol
  • Aid in weight management
  • Reduce your risk of heart disease by up to 30% 14

So, grab your pup, a friend, your spouse, or go it alone, but get out each day and walk.

You'll not only improve the health of your heart, you'll also reduce stress levels, improve mental health, decrease your waistline, strengthen your bones, improve muscle mass, and so much more!

The Male Brain Crisis No One Talks About (But Every Man Feels)

Men experience faster age-related cognitive decline than women.

Memory. Processing speed. Spatial skills.

All decline earlier and more sharply.

But studies show:

Studies have shown regular coffee drinkers have:

  • 29% lower risk of Parkinson's
  • 28% lower risk of dementia
  • Better reaction time, attention, and learning
  • Stronger short- and long-term memory 15

A 2020 study in Nutrients found that caffeine increases brain connectivity and improves executive function.

Another study in The Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found that coffee's polyphenols help reduce amyloid-beta accumulation — a key factor in Alzheimer's.

And when you combine clean coffee with functional ingredients like lion's mane, chaga, coffee-fruit extract, and Alpha-GPC?

You get a daily ritual that is shown to actively support BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), neural resilience, and cognitive performance.16

Supplement Focus

Omega-3s are widely considered crucial for brain health.

Omega-3 fish oil capsules on a yellow surface

These fatty acids improve blood flow to the brain, they're abundant in the cell membranes of brain cells and can preserve membrane health while helping your brain cells communicate with one another.

But, as DHA and EPA (long chain fatty acids) levels decrease with age, brain size can shrink and brain aging can accelerate.

Supporting the health of your brain with a quality omega-3 supplement (look for high DHA and EPA) have shown the potential to increase blood flow to the brain, reverse age-related inflammation, and support the neural structure of your brain.18

This type of support can aid in overall cognitive health, decrease the risk of memory loss, protect against vascular dementia, etc.

Use It Or Lose It

Your brain plays a critical role in overall health.

So, to avoid natural decline, you need to use it regularly!

Read regularly.

Challenge multiple areas of your brain by doing puzzles such as sudoku, crosswords, and wordsearches.

Play chess with a friend.

Enjoy some time playing video games.

Each of these activities can be fun ways to help you unwind and destress, but they're also powerful ways to engage your mind, avoiding decline!

Inflammation Starts in the Gut — Men Pay the Price First

Most men don't realize how much their gut influences their entire body.

A compromised gut can lead to:

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Low energy
  • Poor nutrient absorption
  • Brain fog
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Digestive discomfort

And here's the kicker:

Most Conventional Coffee Is Gut-Hostile

Most conventional coffee is highly acidic (pH 4.8–5.1), which can irritate the gut.19

Lifeboost's low-acid coffee?

  • Light roasts average pH 5.1–5.8.
  • Dark roasts average pH 6.5–6.8 (nearly as alkaline as water).

That means smoother digestion, less irritation, and a gut-friendly daily ritual.

Pair that with probiotics and sodium butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid shown to reduce inflammation and support gut lining integrity, and you have a powerful foundation for gut and immune health.

Supplement Focus

A Good Probiotic

As you age, cellular health declines, and this affects the health of your gut. Because of this, your immune system (housed in your gut) doesn't function as efficiently which can lead to increased inflammation throughout the body, improper nutrient absorption, and therefore an overall increased risk of disease.20

Supplementing with a quality probiotic supports a healthy balance of bacteria within your gut, and this balance doesn't just aid in proper digestion but it can bring support (and balance) throughout your body.

Sodium Butyrate

Sodium Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid produced in the colon when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber.

Studies have shown supplementing with sodium butyrate can aid your gut health by reducing inflammation which may reduce your risk of disease, supporting overall digestive health, and providing energy for the cells in your colon.

Sodium butyrate has been shown to aid in:

  • IBS management
  • Improving general digestive discomfort
  • Repairing the gut lining (leaky gut)
  • Supporting overall metabolic health21

Why Losing Muscle Tanks Testosterone (And Everything Else)

Muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of longevity.

But men naturally lose muscle as they age, which affects metabolism, testosterone, and sexual health.

Research shows that:

  • Resistance training increases testosterone levels
  • Creatine improves strength, muscle mass, and cognitive performance
  • Cardiovascular exercise improves erectile function
  • Stress reduction improves libido and hormone balance

And yes, clean coffee plays a role here too.

Caffeine can improve performance, enhance endurance, and support your metabolism.

A meta-analysis in Sports Medicine found caffeine improves strength and power by 6–12%. But, let's start with your muscles.22

Man lifting weights in a gym

Muscle Building

Gym sessions aren't just a hobby, and building muscle isn't just about appearance.

Building muscle mass is crucial for healthy aging, protecting your metabolic health, improving insulin sensitivity, supporting heart health, improving bone health, and increasing longevity.

When seeking to build muscle, focusing on resistance training, protein, and adding in creatine to your diet can make a huge difference.

Man performing suspension training

Resistance Training

Resistance training is a must when building muscle as this type of training causes microscopic tears in muscle fibers through both stress and tension.

These tears, or damaged muscle fibers, are then repaired by the body through what is known as protein synthesis, a process where amino acids aid in repairing the torn tissue to build new.

Over time, the tears, and subsequently their repair, serve to increase muscle mass, bringing with this increase the added benefits discussed above.23

Protein Prioritization

Building muscle is complex.

Translation? You need to do more than strength or resistance training to help your body build it.

And, this is where diet comes in.

When seeking to build muscle, consuming 1 pound of protein per 1 pound of body weight is recommended as this protein provides the amino acids needed for protein synthesis, the process we discussed above which repairs torn muscle fibers to build muscle.24

Some great sources of protein include:

Eggs
Wild caught salmon
Chicken breast
Turkey breast
Tuna
Plain greek yogurt
Lean beef
Shrimp
Cottage cheese
Beans
Protein powders
Pork
Bison
Creatine powder with scoop

Creatine

Muscle loss is a reality as we age, and while prioritizing protein and actively seeking to build muscle is the remedy for this, supplementing your diet with creatine can serve you by helping to mitigate muscle loss.

Creatine helps to combat muscle loss by improving bone density, strength, and muscle mass when taken in conjunction with regular resistance training.

So, creatine helps to ensure the work you're doing (muscle building) doesn't go to waste, even helping your body benefit fully from your training.25

Couple holding hands on white bedsheets

Sexual Health

A lack of sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, and diminishing sperm count are common concerns in men, especially as they age.

Hormonally speaking, testosterone is one of the primary drivers of men's sexual health.

And, as these levels decline roughly 1% annually beginning at around age 30 in men, related concerns typically follow.26

These concerns can be addressed, however, in the following ways:

Red blood cells flowing through a vessel

Blood Flow

While testosterone is a hormonal driver of men's sexual health, blood flow is considered to be the primary physical driver, specifically regarding both achieving and maintaining erections.

When blood flow is hindered, this is often due to vascular issues such as high blood pressure, clogged arteries, obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, diet, etc.

Thankfully, increasing blood flow not only improves these symptoms, it also aids in increasing testosterone levels, essentially yielding a win-win.

Even better, increased blood flow also improves overall heart health, weight management, and insulin sensitivity.

Regular cardiovascular exercise, stress management, maintaining a healthy weight, quality sleep, and quitting smoking can all help to improve blood flow.

Man resting after exercise outdoors

Exercise

While we mentioned cardiovascular exercise above, as a means to improve blood flow pertaining to sexual health, exercise in and of itself also brings benefits.

Regular exercise is shown to not only improves testosterone levels and blood flow, it also:

  • Reduces stress (lower stress levels lead to increased sexual desire and function)
  • Improves body image (better body image typically leads to better self esteem, and these both serve to increase sexual confidence and improve sexual experiences)
  • Improves energy and stamina (these improvements boost confidence and performance both in and out of the bedroom)27

The Real Reason You're Tired All the Time (It's Not Just "Aging")

Low energy is one of the most common complaints among men over 35.

The culprits?

  • Declining mitochondrial function
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Hormonal shifts
  • Poor sleep
  • Chronic stress

Lifeboost Mitocreamer was designed specifically to support mitochondrial health, the "powerhouses" of your cells.

With MCTs, antioxidants, electrolytes, and collagen, it helps fuel clean, sustained energy without the crash.

Lifeboost Mitocreamer was made with one thing in mind - mitochondrial health.

Mitochondrial health is foundational for energy production as these "cellular powerhouses" provide what is needed by the body for metabolism, muscle contraction, brain function, and hormone levels.

Poor mitochondrial health is often evidenced by muscle weakness, low testosterone, and you guessed it, low energy.28

Mitocreamer contains:

Coffee being poured into a cup

Coffee

We’ve already detailed many of the benefits of coffee, but energy is another area where coffee brings big wins.

Regularly drinking a clean, healthy brew, such as Lifeboost, serves as a powerful energy source as caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in your brain.

Blocking adenosine receptors can prevent drowsiness, but coffee’s caffeine content also can improve alertness and focus, help you have faster reaction times, enhance physical performance, and provide a balanced release of energy.

Coffee being poured into a cup

Sleep

Of course, contrary to what many of us think (in action) we can’t run on coffee alone.

It’s easy to sacrifice sleep for any number of things in life, both work and play, but sleep is crucial for optimal energy levels.

Yes, all the coffee in the world won’t improve your energy levels if you’re not getting adequate restful sleep.

  • When you sleep, your energy stores are replenished.
  • When you sleep, your body repairs itself at the cellular level.
  • During sleep, your body also regulates insulin levels, a necessity for daytime energy and your body’s overall need and usage of energy.
  • Brain function also improves with sleep, so you can reap the reward of mental focus and alertness throughout the day.

Most experts recommend 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night for men.

And, getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, limiting afternoon caffeine, establishing a nighttime routine, avoiding late night meals, and avoiding screens within 2 hours of bed can all help you achieve the restful sleep your body needs.29

Small Changes, Big Results: The Simple Path to a Healthier You

Wow! We've covered a lot of info, but before we close things out, I wanted to leave you with a few powerful tools which can support each and every area of concern we've touched on today.

01

First Up

Diet & Nutrition

Nutrition plays a vital role in men's health.

Everything from heart health to testosterone levels, cognitive health, weight management, muscle building, and more can all be helped or hindered by what you're putting into your body.

To support each of the areas we've discussed today, focus on consuming nutrient dense, whole foods.

You've likely heard me mention this, but I like to live by the 80/20 rule.

80%

Dial it in. Eat clean, whole, nutritious foods that support and fuel health.

20%

Enjoy life. A drink with friends. A slice of pizza at your kid's party. No guilt.

Maybe this means having an alcoholic beverage while out with friends? Perhaps this looks like eating a slice of pizza at your kid's birthday party?

No matter how you cut it, no matter how you enjoy that 20%, just make sure this isn't your norm, instead focusing on real, nutritious, great tasting food for optimal fuel the majority of the time.

02

Next

Exercise & Movement

As we get older, many are tempted to sit more and move less. But frankly, that's the worst thing you can do for your body.

The risk of mortality increases by 20-30% when you spend a good portion of your day sitting.

The remedy? Good, old-fashioned movement.

I mentioned walking and strength training throughout a few of the suggestions listed above, and these are great places to start.

Walk daily.

Strength train 3-4 times per week.

And, find something fun to do. Find some activity that brings you joy, and engage regularly.

03

Lastly

Foster a Positive Mindset

Mindset is one of the most underrated and underutilized tools we have when it comes to supporting health and wellness.

A positive outlook/mindset alone is proven to:

  • Reduce stress levels
  • Boost immunity
  • Aid in weight management
  • Improve cardiovascular health
  • Improve sexual health (linked to lower stress levels)
  • Boost cognitive health30
Smiling man pointing upward outdoors

So then, how can you foster such a mindset?

→ Find something to be grateful for each and every day. In other words, practice daily gratitude.

→ Keep a positive outlook, especially during trying circumstances.

→ Surround yourself with likeminded, positive people.

→ Practice positive self-talk, or incorporate daily affirmations.

→ Focus on your strengths, see weaknesses as areas for growth.

→ Smile…often!
